Trend Files #033 | Is Fashion (As We Know It) Dying Right Before Our Eyes?

Whew….what a week…right? If you haven’t heard the crazy news this week about Christian Lacroix…then you must have had your eyes heavily pressed on Hollywood gossip sites..ha! I know I have been…shoot have you seen that spectacular video as of yet? (Click Here). But not to stray away from the topic at hand, I was somewhat bummed at the mere fact that Christian Lacroix is planning to file for bankruptcy. It was kind of jolting…seeing as though when I was a kid my mother often talked about how she loved Christian Lacroix….and this all was in the 80′s. And me being lyrically introduced to the designer thanks in part to Lil’ Kim back in the 90′s, I knew right then and there that I had to get my hands on a piece of the Lacroix. And while I didn’t… the recession has hit everyone with a grand slam! Now Lacroix is forced into bankruptcy? So what does this mean for the fashion world as we know it? Is it slowly dying right before our eyes….and everyone is walking around oblivious to the mere fact that it is – with the hopes that economy miraculously bounce back? Could Lacroix’s financial situation be the first of many brands/companies to be facing the same gloom & doom? Only time will tell…but for the mean time- do you think that fashion (as you know it) is dying right before your eyes? I’ve you got some pennies for my shambled thoughts….through a coin or two in my direction.

I think so financially and creatively.
im in agreement with a the great. i mean tee look at the womens streetwear game it sucks! we dont see nothing really at all! what do we have hellz bells which got wack over the past couple of months. claw money is still doing her tshirts and hoodies and mob is doing pretty ok. then comes the high end brands that are all copying one another and the prices for some crap is astronomically higher than most peoples mortage. but the guys are doing pretty decent but the ladies we are suffering heavily and i really dont think anyone is paying attention to the game.
I am with a the great as well!
an interesting design from the
weirdest to the hippest
Loved it!
i’m in agreement with you all. we’re watching the slow and painful death of fashion when in my mind this should be the time it flourishes. art is all about taking what you have and making something crazy amazing from it, so I’m wondering why designers are getting so involved with using super expensive materials and don’t go back to using what they have.
and streetwear @candy corn…dont even get me started on streetwear! i’ve taken a sabbatical because the game is getting wack. and by wack i mean house of dereon, roca wear, WACK. people producing the same shit season after season….SAD
I don’t know if I am in total agreement. I do think as of now, in this recession, yes there is going to be less creativity and especially less funds. In every deep recession there are businesses that have to file for bankruptcy including names in fashion. Unfortunately he has become one. I think this is really the time for designers to go back to the drawing board and re-create and come out with something better than before. In times of recession, creativity does come forth and comes out when the recession is over. So stay positive!
Hi Ladies….wow I see everyone put a penny in my pot today! Well I agree with ALL OF YOU! I think that during the recession some designers tend go crazy. Granted since 2006, it was the era of the IT bag, shoe, and pretty much everything in between. Then at the end of 2007 starting 2008 designers and consumers have been on the fence about alot of things. Designers I think have been trying to meet the demands of previously hot seasons. Then consumers started paying close attention to their bank accounts. How I feel personally about the entire issue, is that during rough times like these, couturiers go harder on trying to lure in once thriving “IT” shoppers by creating a crap load of goodies without really thinking about the end result. Now adays the average shopper is pondering if they should or shouldnt go hard with what’s hot on. Oh and as far as streetwear goes….I think that the scene is trying to play closer attention to what the women need and want. Please, keep in mind ladies…production costs are NO JOKE on any end of the retail food chain. Whether it be limited edition or mass produced goods….it can get crazy! The recession means….destroy & rebuild in my book. I think that everything will pick up steam in due time. And I think designers will be more realistic in the near future….let’s just hope so! Shoot I wish that the luxury brands would lower some of their prices just a tad….perhaps it would make a slight difference on the retail game as we know it.
