Wintour Was Ok, But Coddington Made The “September Issue” Way Better – (’09 Trend Flashback #009)

Back in August, everyone ( with their brains finely tuned into this realm we call fashion) anticipated sipping on bottle water while munching on invisible super saturated buttered popcorn with the hopes of seeing their fairy godmother on screen. Yes it was your first shot at seeing Anna Wintour at her best on screen no less. Who can resist that shrewd look of annoyance and utter disgust? La Mer Lifting Face Serum couldn’t penetrate itself beyond that Teflon skin Anna wears so well. I wasn’t eager to slap my cash on seeing the movie in an actual theater, so I will fully admit (right here and now ) that I had seen the entire film online! Don’t ask me where because I would never tell you. As I sat up for an hour and fifty minutes on my couch (with my coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other), my eyes were glued to the laptop screen. I had to see what the big deal was in regards to Anna Wintour. Half way into the movie, I would watch Vogue employees chew back their words of honesty. Bow down at the whim of a slinky woman who indeed does have an eye for all things chic. But yet, couldn’t understand the intimidation factor of this woman. Could it be her cold blank stare that cracks the backs of the weak hearted? Or could it be her serious work ethic and low tolerance for nonsense that drives the masses into cracked slots of office walls. What was it? After keen observation, I realized that Anna Wintour doesn’t really care what her admirers think, to her it’s all about getting the job done. She has a hard work ethic and isn’t behind the scenes at Vogue just to show face…it’s about work! Ahhh….but wait! Her job wouldn’t be complete without her other half. And no I am not talking about Andre Leon Talley (even though we all adore him to death). The main highlight of the “September Issue” came in the form of a very tall, wired haired red head named Grace Coddington. The soft spoken Coddington gave viewers another side of how cat-like the publishing realm can be. No matter how hard you work, sometimes even the best ideas & decisions go unseen and unheard. And Coddington proved that she has been a devout employee for many years. Through it all Grace, didn’t react like many of her co-workers, she didn’t mind bucking heads with Wintour – even though at the end of the day Anna reigned supreme in her decisions. The movie as a whole was pretty good, but at the end of the day you have to wonder who will be next in line to take Anna Wintour’s place at Vogue.

i loved grace. she showed that fashion isn’t just a meaningless superficial business, and that there are still people who care about the artistry of the industry and not just the money and glamour. definitely have tons of respect for her and her craft
I love Ms. Wintour and Coddington. They are such an inspiration.
