(We forgot to mention Trend Flashback #004 – so let’s scroll back on one)
This year has been a very interesting year….trust me! I think that I’ve had my full share of seeing celebrities stream around town in nothing less than a pair of tights, pumps, and a jacket. It’s like everyone decided to opt out of wearing the necessary staple that completes an entire outfit. Hence Lindsay Lohan who went on a free-for-all self-promotion of her 6126 legging collection, which featured some very interesting, looks. However, she’s stepped out of bounds rocking oversized T-shirts & boyfriend jackets – pairing them with hosiery instead of her trademark leggings. Taylor Momsen is fashion’s renegade who has taken her love of thigh-highs to the outer limits. She’s been spotted on numerous occasions throughout the Meatpacking District in a pair of semi-destroyed fishnet thigh highs accommodated by double layered cotton T-shirts. Automatically we can throw blame on Lady Gaga for creating this trend in 2009, but really…wouldn’t be nice to see celebrities take responsibility for their own fashion mishaps? Hopefully fashionista’s attempting to continue on this trend may want to fall back and cease the madness for 2010.

In comparison to 2008 up until now Rihanna’s style has transformed itself into somewhat of a daily spectacle. Everyone is watching by the computer screens just to see what she’ll wear next. Only if we could be a fly in her closet – we’re quite sure Rihanna has an abundant of high-end selections that will make only the most devout fashion enthusiast go into a spiritual trance. Her most highlighted moments came during the summer of 2009, where she was spotted wearing Rodartes highly priced $970 leggings. Costing Rihanna , to receive some backlash from some of her most favorite critics. Some said that Rihanna was on the road of “trying to hard”. I too felt that need to add in my two cents into the mix. But the summer definitely belonged to the Barbados-born Rihanna, because she took chances on this year’s most talked about trends. Mixing, matching, and sometimes butchering looks – we all couldn’t help but to take notes. But you have to admit that once the fall came rolling in Rihanna’s fashion selections gave you that feeling of “Comme ci, comme ça”. That ”forced” in your face styling hit a one note with some. Ultra gothic glam, dark hued lips, newly blonde tresses tends to dull Rihanna’s over all beauty. Let’s pray that Rihanna’s look perfects itself in the new year. Something polished, less “HARD”, and naturally Rihanna!

If you thought 2009 was pretty slow on the fashion forefront, you were probably right! That was until the month of October when Alexander McQueen took his spring 2010 collection to a whole different galaxy. Towering super galactic hairstyles, digitally printed dresses, and shoes that looked like something out of the movie Total Recall came floating down the runway. There were mixed reviews on the entire collection, but there was a common focus that many had to debate on…..and it had to do with McQueen’s dynamic on women’s feet. When you think about the spring months, you totally envision seeing conservatively flat shoes or a heel at stacked at a decent height….at a maximum of at least 5” inches. But who needs a mere five inches when you can go even higher. McQueens theory put the hex on us, so much so that three of his selected models (Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha Poly, & Sasha Pivovarova) all bowed out of the show – refusing to wear those android-esque shoes. Ahhh…but as you already know fashion never scares die-hard enthusiasts away – hence Lady Gaga & Daphne Guinness who have already taken their chance on the wild-side to show us how it’s really done (outside of the runways).

Happy Holidays everyone! I’ve decided to work through the holiday season….well because I have a lot of catching up to do! So if you so happen to be taking a break from your holiday festivities to scan through my series of 2009 Trend Flashbacks – thank you very much – xo! Alrighty so let’s kick into over drive to scan back at some of 2009’s most interesting Trend Flashbacks! And Lady Gaga is at the top of the list for many. Gaga (whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – age 23) hit the scene on a serious note, selling over 20 million digital singles and over four million in album sales. That’s a lot to hold under one couture studded belt. Aside from belting out high adrenaline dance tunes such as Poke Face, Gaga has set the scene for some of today’s most interesting trends that still have some of us scratching our heads. Hence, the “no bottoms look” (which I’ll talk about a little later). While Gaga has been noted as one of the most controversial artists for 2009 due to her raunchy outfits & out of the box videos, there is no denying that there is something about Gaga that makes us want to dance around and loose our senses. But for the most part, I can’t help but to sit down and wonder what she’ll wear next. I’m quite sure Lady Gaga will pump up the volume come 2010 in the apparel department. Check out some of Lady Gaga’s most memorable looks of 2009 after the jump!

OK! Let’s rewind to about February of this year….when Kanye West was spotted working the scene during New York fashion week in hand with a tall statuesque -head shaven Amber Rose. The internet went crazy looking to find out more about the buxom beauty. I know for a mere fact that I spend hours googling as much info about her only to see pictorials of Rose in Smooth magazine. The Philly native is no stranger on getting noticed. She’s managed to become an overnight celebrity, thanks to Kanye West of course (before his epic fail MTV Video Music Awards stunt). Through the wire and back, Amber has set sail in the realm of high society – being featured in Elle magazine, inking a deal with Ford Models, and now she works the scene headlining various parties throughout the country. Aside from gaining a following of admirers Amber also has a handful of sharp-shooters who say that her 15 minutes of fame is up. But we totally doubt if her 15 minutes has yet to expire, Rose’s sense of style is truly off the hook! Giving you a dose of that “tomboyish/ around the way girl” glam we can’t help but to love what she has in store for us come 2010.
Do you think Amber Rose has become ’09’s “IT” girl….or are we reaching ….(just a little)?

As I was sitting down watching television, I just reminded myself that the year is basically over! And this is usually the time of year where I have to dig deep to remember both the highs and lows that have made my year complete. I’ve been keeping a list of notable 2009 trends that have made constant headlines. One of my favorite trends of 2009 have raised a few eye brows, the Harem pant has been under fire by many critics. Some of whom really never even went as far as trying this trend out in the first place…but automatically dismissing a very interesting look. Granted, there were women who felt that this trend was more suitable for slender body types. Being as though I am a woman of curves , and thanks to many of my fashionable friends for sending me samples from their collections – I’ve realized that the look of the Harem pant works well on any body type. It all depends on how you go about pairing into what you already have in your wardrobe. The harem pant trend has sent a blitz of designers back into the lab, by creating a series of styles that come in the form of overalls & super high waisted looks. Metallic colorways straight down to tie-dyed prints have been used to spice of up the look. Thus sparking a ongoing backlash of retro “Hammer-Time” commentary featured on numerous blogs. I know we can’t please all fashion enthusiasts…but I have to put my approval stamp on this trend! If your still into harem pants like I am – check out some of my favorite picks after the jump!

The fashion scene is getting crushed left right and center. Bad enough Phi is kicking the bucket. But it seems as though the recession, poor management (all across the board), and the lack of enthused shoppers really have a hand in making the retail scene what it is at the current moment. Chickdowntown.com is currently going through some hard financial times. According to Pittsburgh Live the high-end fashion retailer has defaulted on a $973,000 loan issued by Enterprise Bank. Other clothing suppliers and companies are filing suit against the Pennsylvania –based retailer. Chickdowntown.com has kicked open the doors when they first open up shop in 2007, running a series of campaigns via Vogue, Bazaar, & Perez Hilton (just to name a few) . Finally creating a name for itself in the game of high-end womenswear retail, but somewhere down the line customers have been complaining about the service via Chickdowntown. Amy Reed founder of Chickdowntown, has already started a new blog named fashionandotherstuff.com detailing her daily accounts on various trends, personal style, and other informative aspects of her life readers may find interesting. Reed goes on to telling readers that Chickdowntown’s days “may be numbered”. Reports claim that all sales from merchandise (found via CDT) will go toward paying off the credit line owed to creditors. Merchandise was to be sold at rock bottom prices….however Chickdowntowns site is offline and redirects to Reed’s new blog. Could this be the end of CDT? If so…what will happen to the orders made by waiting holiday shoppers?
Note: After days of being offline, Chickdowntown.com has resurfaced on Friday! Just in time for the post-Christmas shopping blitz.
