Maya Okafor spent six years on the trend desk at Refinery29, where she learned that a good trend call arrives in the window between a sound hitting 200,000 TikTok posts and the morning a legacy outlet wakes up. Then she watched that window collapse. Trades got moved to overnight scrapers; the morning meeting became a recap, not a discovery.

In November 2022, she and three former scouts signed a lease on a fourth-floor office at 68 Jay Street, Suite 410, in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and opened Trenddoll as an explicit counter-program: humans cover the ground, data ranks the signal, and the brief refreshes every six hours, around the clock.

The first hires were not engineers. They were an ex–i-D beauty editor in London, a Seoul-based K-pop obsessive who had been filing newsletters from a PC bang, a vintage-dealer-turned–streetwear scout in Lagos, and a former Nylon culture writer in Mexico City. Today, eighteen scouts operate across nine time zones, supported by four data engineers who turn their notes into the Trend Velocity Score™.
